Announcing the HLS First Annual
Creative Writing Contest
In conjunction with the “Reading Rocks” Book Fair happening at the end of March, we are having our first ever Creative Writing Contest here at Highland Lakes.
This contest is open to all students in 2nd through 8th grade. Submissions will be judged by our HLS middle school Language Arts teachers and are due by Friday, March 16th.
To enter, get an entry form from your teacher, the library or office, fill in the information on it, staple it to your submission and turn it in to your teacher (L/A teacher for middle school), the office or the library. Submissions should be a fiction short story of at least 3 paragraphs, but not more than 5 pages. Handwritten submissions are acceptable, but typed or printed are preferred. The story can be on any topic appropriate for school, but this year’s featured topic is “reading”.
Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
- 50% - Content: Plot, characters, descriptive language, story flow, use of featured topic.
- 25% - Mechanics: Spelling, punctuation, indentation, grammar, proper word usage.
- 25% - Neatness/Presentation: Legibility, spacing, readability, illustrations/pictures.
Each of 2nd through 6th grade will be judged separately. 7th and 8th grade will be judged together. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 27th during morning announcements and will be posted, along with their winning submissions, at the Book Fair. First prize for each grade will be a $10 gift certificate good for any merchandise at the Book Fair. Second prize will be a $5 gift certificate. Prizes can be picked up from the library anytime during the week of the Fair.
Winning stories will also be bound together in a hardcover book and become a permanent addition to our library. Be a part of HLS history and get writing!
